The Christmas Carol Concert by Candlelight in Ripon Cathedral has been held in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support for over two decades. It is now a well-known annual event supported by Aysgarth School choirs together with the choir and orchestra of Queen Mary’s School, with a rich and interesting programme of professional musicians, talented performers and celebrity readers. The uplifting music in the splendid beauty of the candlelit Cathedral marks the start of Christmas festivities for many.
The Carol Concert is organised by the Yorkshire Macmillan Carol Concert Committee, a dedicated group of volunteers. In 2019 our concert raised over £34,000 for Macmillan. We were sadly unable to hold a concert in December 2020 due to the Covid 19 pandemic, but we are determined to raise whatever funds we can for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Over the years with the generosity of our sponsors, advertisers, donors and audience we have raised £430,850 for Macmillan Cancer Support. This has provided local services such as funding for professional posts like the Macmillan Children’s Cancer Nurse at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds, funding for our Macmillan Support Line in Shipley and help in building our new state-of-the-art Sir Robert Ogden Cancer Centre in Northallerton.
In the spirit of Christmas, we have created a link to a short video of the 2019 concert to give you a moment to pause, reflect and enjoy the essence of what the concert means to us all, please click through here
With your donation we can continue support many of the crucial cancer support services available to local people whose lives have been affected by cancer.
